The team meets at the front entrance and takes a moment to take in the scale of the challenge before beginning the work.
They walk through the space, room by room to understand how each was intended to be used and where the flow got interrupted.
They begin the “unbuilding” phase where they move as many of the contents out into the yard to see what is actually there. They sort things into logical groups and decide what stays and what goes.
“White space is like air: it is necessary for design to breathe. It is not ‘nothing’—it is the space that makes the ‘something’ possible.”
Jan Tschichold
With a solid grasp of the backstory, the workspace empty, and contents organized and sorted into groups the team begins to identify patterns and outline a blueprint for the rebuild.
The fun part! They move all the necessary items back, and also remove old structures and barriers. The goal is a space where it’s easy to discover, find and move about.
The team stands by the reorganized space knowing that keeping things useful and clear is never truly finished; it’s a steady, daily practice of care.
